Butterscotch Brownies


  • ½ cup shortening
  • 2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup ORIGINAL MALT-O-MEAL®, dry
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped nuts


Heat oven to 350°F. In a 2-quart saucepan, heat shortening over low heat until melted; remove from heat. Mix in brown sugar, eggs and vanilla. In a large bowl, combine flour, cereal, baking soda, salt and nuts. Add shortening mixture; mix well. Spread into a lightly greased 13X9-inch pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Cool; cut into squares. Yield: 24 bars.
