What’s in breakfast cereal?

Cereal is typically made of grains, such as wheat, oats, rice or corn. Sugar is added to some cereals to provide a sweet taste. Then, vitamins and flavors are added, and finally other delicious additions like fruits, nuts, and marshmallows.

We hold our suppliers to high standards, ensuring they follow all environmental, health, and safety laws and regulations. We also strive to create a safe and clean workplace. Watch a video about our commitment to safety here.

Ingredients, like wheat, oats, and corn, are delivered to one of Post® cereals’ nine manufacturing plants across the U.S. and Canada. Watch a video about our ingredients here.

Next, the ingredients go into a hopper or mixing kettle, and some of the ingredients get mixed together. Water and steam are added to cook the ingredients. Flakes are flattened and wheat is shredded. Next, the cereal is dried or puffed to achieve the desired size. Then, sugar, vitamins and flavors are added for the finishing touches. Last, we add the classic homemade granola, fruits, nuts or marshmallows! Watch a video about our cooking process here.

Post® cereal packaging comes in all shapes and sizes. Many of our cereal boxes are even made from recycled materials.Watch a video about our packaging and sustainability here.

Finally, a dedicated team works hard to safely and efficiently transport cereal from our manufacturing plants to a series of distribution centers and then to your go-to grocery stores. Watch a video about distributing cereal here.

What are the nutritional and health benefits to fiber and whole grains?

Whole grains include the entire grain kernel in its original proportions (the parts of the grain are the bran, germ and starchy endosperm). Common whole grains in cereals include wheat, oats, corn and rice. To find whole grain products, look for whole grains or brown rice in the ingredients list.

Whole grains are a source of many essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. Many whole grain cereals provide dietary fiber which helps keep you feeling full and aids in digestion. To learn more, see this information from the Food and Drug Administration.
